Joan

As a mother, business owner, and community bridge-builder, Joan is the backbone and sole provider for her family. Through her love of handmade goods — sourced and commissioned from her homeland of Kenya, Africa — she brings to light her culture and heritage to the United States, furthering opportunity, sustainability and a fair trade marketplace for makers and growers in Africa.

Sandrah

Sandrah immigrated to the United States with Joan when she was just 3 years old. Speaking Swahili from birth, she quickly adapted to the American culture. Now, as a college student at the University of Iowa, Sandrah and Joan have built Josina’s Handmade to provide opportunity for their family while also bonding through business and entrepreneurship. Sandrah works closely with her mother to design, source and commission their authentic African goods to deliver a modern take on ancient craft traditions.
